Obstetric Ultrasound Scan
The use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy has become a very useful diagnostic tool in Obstetrics. The procedure is often a standard part of prenatal care because of the varied information it provides about the health of the mother and fetus.
Real-time scanners provide a continuous picture of the moving fetus and can be depicted on a monitor screen. Very high frequency sound waves are emitted from a transducer which is placed over the maternal abdomen. The transducer is moved to show any particular content of the uterus. The information is recomposed back into a picture on the monitor screen (a sonogram, or ultrasonogram).
